What Year of Action means to Me
Everyone knows someone who can’t make a decision. Where do they want to eat? ‘Can’t decide’. What do they want to do today? ‘Don’t know’. What time are you meeting up? ‘It’s up to you’.
It’s me. I’m that someone. On behalf of all the someones in your lives that are like this, I’d like to take this opportunity to say that we’re sorry. We know it’s annoying. Or, if you’re that someone, welcome to the club!
From wandering around the shop unable to decide what I want for tea, to creating a mound of clothes on the floor every time I’m going out because I can’t decide on an outfit, I’m really bad at making decisions. And the minute I finally make one, I’m already second guessing it.
I can’t make a decision to save my life. But what about saving the planet for future generations, or improving our communities?
When it comes to sustainability and communities, the problems are so big. This isn’t just picking what book I’m reading next, or whether I feel more like pizza or pasta. There’s so much information, so many options, a huge sense of urgency and responsibility to get it right. Plus, the decision paralysis that comes with the feeling that, no matter what you do, it’ll never make enough impact anyway. But the problems are only getting more pressing. We all have to do something.
That’s why A Year of Action is important to me. Actions handpicked and outlined by experts; a roadmap of weekly micro actions to take. All elements that’ll keep me consistent - all inaction from not being able to decide what to do banished - whilst being easy to slot into my everyday life. It makes it easy to do the right thing and play my part against the challenges of today.
Plus, if we do this together and build a community of action takers, our impact won’t feel small. Yes, these are big problems. But together we can do big things.
2023 is the year to take action, and the Year of Action is making it as easy and accessible for us all to do our part. I hope you’ll join us on the journey.
